Bon Accord and Canaan

Two residential villages between the airport and Bon Accord Lagoon. For visitors, the lagoon is what counts.

The paddle dips into the shallow water of Bon Accord Lagoon. Mangroves stand on either side, seagrass grows beneath the kayak. Across the water the residential streets of Bon Accord begin. Bon Accord and Canaan are places to live and shop, and the reason for a detour is the lagoon.

Since July 2005 the lagoon has been part of the Ramsar site Buccoo Reef/Bon Accord Lagoon Complex. Young fish grow up among the mangroves and seagrass, and Rough Guides counts more than 30 species of waterbird. Rough Guides also notes that effluent from a sewage plant flows in. In the middle of the lagoon lies No Man's Land, a sand spit you can only reach by boat.
